Most newborn booties are designed to fit babies from birth to about 3 months, typically for feet around 3 to 3.5 inches long (roughly 7.5 to 9 cm). In many size charts, that range is labeled “Newborn,” “0–3M,” or “Size 0,” but the exact fit depends more on foot length than the tag on the package.
Start with a quick measurement: place your baby’s heel against a flat surface and measure to the tip of the longest toe. If your baby won’t cooperate, trace the foot on paper and measure the outline. For snug, stay-on booties, choose a size that’s close to that measurement with a little wiggle room—about 1/4 inch (6 mm) is usually plenty for newborns.
Baby sizing isn’t standardized across brands. One company’s “newborn” may fit a 6.8 cm foot, while another’s fits 9 cm comfortably. That’s why product listings that include an in-inch or in-cm foot-length range are more reliable than age-based sizing alone.
Unlike shoes, newborn booties are often meant for warmth and comfort, not walking. Oversizing can make them slide off, especially if your baby kicks a lot. If you’re choosing between two sizes, pick the smaller size when the bootie has stretchy cuffs or ties, and the larger size when it has a structured sole or less stretch.
If your baby’s foot length falls right at the top end of the newborn range, consider sizing up to 0–6 months—especially for chunky feet or thick socks. If it’s at the lower end, a true newborn size or “preemie/newborn” option will stay on better and feel less bulky.
